چکیده

The thin layer drying of pine forest residues consisting of bark, needles, leaves, and chips was experimentally conducted at air temperatures of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80C. Physical and chemical properties of fractionated forest residues were determined to evaluate its fuel properties. The experimental data obtained from thin layer drying study were fitted with Lewis, Page, and Henderson and Pabis equations to evaluate the drying behavior of the forest residues. Among the three drying models, the Henderson and Pabis model fitted well with the experimental drying data at the tested temperatures (40, 50, 60, 70, 80C), achieving R values of 0.992, 0.994, 0.997, 0.989, and 0.983, respectively. The drying constant k for the forest residues was increased with increase in drying air temperature and was correlated in the form of a second order regression equation. The thin layer drying data developed from this study will be useful for designing low temperature dryers for forest residues.

Impact of Industrial Source on the Chemical Composition of Loblolly Pine Bark

The chemical compositions of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) bark samples from two industrial sources were determined for whole bark as well as the inner and outer bark components. Differences in extractive contents of the whole bark samples were primarily attributed to the different debarking methods which afforded different proportions of inner and outer bark. Treatment of the extractive-free ...

Evaluation of Nonlinear Height-Diameter Models of Two Important Species of Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia) and Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis), in the Planted Forests

Knowledge about the relationship between tree height (H) and diameter at breast height (D) is crucial for forest planning, monitoring, biomass estimation, and forest stands dynamics description. In this study, 20 different height-diameter models were evaluated to estimate accurately the height of the trees of Pinus brutia and Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis species in Arabdagh region (...

Throughfall Chemistry of Persian Maple (Acer velutinim) and Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia) Plantations in East of Mazandaran

Changes in the quality of water reaching forest floor are of the most important consequences of native and exotic tree species plantations for rehabilitating the derelict areas of the Caspian forests. The aim of this study was to compare the chemical composition of throughfall in plantations of Persian maple (Acer velutinim Bioss) and Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia Ten) in Darabkola Forest, Sa...

Effect of Drying Methods on Warp and Grade of 2 by 4’s From Small-Diameter Ponderosa Pine

Two studies were performed to characterize and control warp in nominal 2by 4-in. (standard 38by 89-mm) dimension lumber sawn from small-diameter ponderosa pine trees. One study was conducted at a commercial sawmill with trees harvested in central Arizona. The other study was conducted at the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, in small experimental kilns with lu...

Grade distribution and drying degrade of sweetgum and yellow-poplar structural lumber

The fact that the supply of southern pine timber is changing to include more lower quality plantation stock may provide incentive for utilizing lower density hardwoods for structural lumber. Yellow-poplar and sweetgum are potential substitutes for southern pine. A major problem in utilizing soft hardwoods for structural lumber is the difficulties associated with drying. A study of the grade dis...
